Overview
The Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute (HJD) is a 220-bed voluntary not-for-profit hospital located at 17th Street and Second Avenue in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan.
First incorporated in 1905 and relocated to its present site in 1979, HJD has evolved from an orthopaedic/rheumatologic hospital into a specialty medical institute with expertise in orthopaedic surgery, rheumatology and molecular medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and neurology and specialized neurosurgery.
HJD provides primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of service in the treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of musculoskeletal, rheumatologic, and neurological diseases and injuries. Serving an area that encompasses New York City, Nassau County, upstate New York, Northern New Jersey, and beyond, HJD is an affiliate of NYU Medical Center and a teaching hospital of New York University School of Medicine.
The Department of Rheumatology and Medicine at HJDSince 1989, HJD's Department of Rheumatology and Medicine has been led by Dr. Steven B. Abramson, who in 2001 was also named Director of the Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine of NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Abramson is now in addition to Director of the Division of Rheumatology, Senior Vice President and Vice Dean of Education, Faculty and Academic Affairs, as well as Professor of Medicine and Pathology.
The Rheumatology Department at HJD is a nationally known center for the treatment and study of rheumatologic disorders, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, and rheumatic and connective tissue disorders. The department's Center for Arthritis and Autoimmunity is designed to provide patients with a well-coordinated comprehensive program for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.
HJD's Osteoporosis Center has recently been expanded to fill a growing need as osteoporosis increases among an aging population. In addition to treating patients with a variety of drug therapies, the center is actively involved in researching new therapies.
The Department of Rheumatology and Medicine at HJD is world-famous for the translational, or "bench- to-bedside," research conducted at its Rheumatology Research Laboratory, the Peter D. Seligman Center for Advanced Therapeutics, and the Osteoporosis Center. The department's comprehensive research includes the study of drugs, drug delivery systems and protocols, and the roles genes play in the development and treatment of rheumatic diseases, with a particular focus on the highly complex autoimmune diseases.
