Research

Within the Categorical Residency Program, there are several options for research.
The ABIM Research Pathway
Designed for those individuals who have a clear commitment to a career in research, residency training in internal medicine is condensed from three years to two so that the individual can enter or re-enter the laboratory or research environment early. Those who take part are expected to complete a fellowship and continue to pursue their academic interests within that specialty area.

Research Tracks
In addition to the ABIM Research Pathway option, NYU is fully committed to house officers who want to pursue research during residency on a more limited basis, particularly during selected elective months during one to three years of the residency and in some situations for longer periods. This can include basic science as well as clinical projects. Neal H. Steigbigel, M.D., Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and an attending physician at the VA and Bellevue is Director of the Research Program for Medical Residents and can help with further questions about the program.
For additional information, any interested applicant or house officer

The residency program is prepared to modify a house officer's schedule in order to accommodate research endeavors. A list of NYUSOM faculty investigators in a variety of subspecialties who are willing and able to be research supervisors/mentors for medical residents interested in becoming involved in research projects, together with titles of their research interests and contact information is available through the Chief Residents office and is posted on the Medical Residents web site.
