Hematology & Medical Oncology Electives

NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers hematology and medical oncology electives that provide educational opportunities for residents and medical students.

Medical Student Electives

Medical students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, as well as visiting students, can take an elective course with the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology. The course is open to students with a strong interest in hematology or medical oncology who have completed core clerkship requirements. Students are assigned to one of our hematology or oncology services for a four-week block.

During the elective, you may work at any of these three inpatient locations: NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, or VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. You get hands-on experience diagnosing and treating benign and malignant tumors and hematologic conditions. Educational opportunities include weekly core lectures, grand rounds, research seminars, hematology and oncology clinics, and a journal club.

Medical Student Electives at Tisch Hospital

Students care for patients admitted for a variety of benign and malignant hematologic diagnoses, such as sickle cell anemia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, coagulopathies, myeloma, lymphoma, and leukemia. Under the supervision of a fellow and faculty members, you also provide assistance with inpatient consults and can attend outpatient clinics.

Medical Student Electives at NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue

Students care for patients admitted for benign, hematologic, and solid tumor diagnoses. You can attend outpatient clinics with the fellow.

For hematology consults, you work closely with the first-year fellow during inpatient consults and present to the attending physician. These patients have a variety of benign and malignant hematologic diagnoses, such as sickle cell anemia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, coagulopathies, myeloma, lymphoma, and leukemia. You are exposed to bone marrow aspirations and biopsies and also attend the hematology and oncology clinic with the fellow, as well as all conferences.

For oncology consults, you work closely with the second-year fellow to perform inpatient consults and present to the attending physician. These patients have a variety of newly diagnosed or established diagnoses, such as lung cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, and pancreatic cancer. You also attend the hematology and oncology clinic with the fellow, as well as all conferences.

Medical Student Electives at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System

Students work closely with the fellow and attending physician to provide consultations to teams caring for patients with benign hematologic diagnoses and oncological conditions. You attend both solid tumor and hematology clinic at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System’s Manhattan location.

Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Rego Park

At Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Rego Park, an outpatient location in Queens, students work closely with attending physicians to evaluate patients who have a variety of benign and malignant hematologic or oncological diagnoses. You also attend all conferences.

Applying for Medical Student Electives

Contact the program coordinator to enquire about space availability and to obtain initial approval. The program coordinator provides instructions for applying for the residency and a formal application, which must be submitted to the registrar’s office.

Students from other institutions must be enrolled in a Liaison Committee on Medical Education–accredited medical school. Requirements for visiting MD students include certifications, insurance, and other documents.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine students must contact the Office of Registration and Student Records, which notifies the program coordinator.

Resident Electives

The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology offers clinical electives for NYU Grossman School of Medicine and visiting residents. These electives are reserved for internal medicine residents with a strong interest in hematology and medical oncology. Residents are highly encouraged to rotate through the elective during their second year of residency, before interview season.

Rotations are organized into two- or four-week blocks. During the elective, the resident gains experience in diagnosing and treating benign and malignant tumors and hematologic conditions. Educational opportunities include weekly core lectures, grand rounds, research seminars, hematology and oncology clinics, and a journal club.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Hematology Consults

If you are a resident participating in our elective, you work closely with a first-year fellow to handle inpatient consults at Bellevue and present to the attending physician. These patients have a variety of benign and malignant hematologic diagnoses, including sickle cell anemia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, coagulopathies, myeloma, lymphoma, and leukemia. You are exposed to bone marrow aspiration and biopsies. You also attend hematology and oncology clinic with the fellow, as well as all conferences.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Oncology Consults

During oncology consults at Bellevue, you work closely with the second-year fellow to see inpatients and present findings to the attending physician. These patients have a variety of newly identified or established diagnoses, including lung cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, or pancreatic cancer. You also attend hematology and oncology clinic with the fellow, as well as all conferences.

Kimmel Pavilion Hematology Consults and Inpatient Elective

Residents participating in an elective at NYU Langone’s Kimmel Pavilion work closely with the first-year fellow, the inpatient attending physician, and outpatient attendings to see patients who have hematologic conditions. You also attend hematology and oncology clinic with the fellow, as well as all conferences.

Perlmutter Cancer Center Outpatient Elective

You work with a select number of attending physicians who see patients with specific solid tumor diagnoses at Perlmutter Cancer Center outpatient locations. Each block must be performed for two to four weeks. Blocks include lung, gastrointestinal, breast, melanoma and genitourinary, neuro-oncology and sarcoma, and hematology.

Electives are available from January to June, when hematology and medical oncology fellows are not present.
