Division of Medical Humanities

The study of history, literature, philosophy, and the visual arts enriches medical training.

The mission of NYU Langone Health’s Division of Medical Humanities, a part of the Department of Medicine, is based on a belief of William Osler, one of the founders of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Osler insisted that “the spirit of the humanities is the greatest single gift in education.” Under the leadership of David M. Oshinsky, PhD, division director, we aim to capture that spirit by addressing key issues in healthcare through the prism of the humanistic disciplines, including history, literature, philosophy, and the visual arts. We believe our educational programs widen the scope of current medical education and enhance the professionalism of the physicians we train.

The Division of Medical Humanities partners with several groups across NYU Langone, including the Division of Medical Ethics and the Master Scholars Program in Humanistic Medicine, which Dr. Oshinsky co-directs.
