Letter from the Director

Joel D. Ernst, M.D.
Director, NYU Division of Infectious
Diseases and Immunology

Infectious diseases are increasing as important problems for individual patients, specific populations, and the global community.  In recent past, at least 14 new human pathogens have been discovered, endemic infectious diseases have spread, and many pathogens have become resistant to antibiotics.

The NYU Division of Infectious Diseases is growing to be a leader in the global effort to diagnose, treat, and prevent established and emerging infectious diseases.  Through multidisciplinary efforts, recruitment of outstanding faculty, collaborations with leading investigators at NYU and beyond, and emphasis on establishing an outstanding Fellowship Training Program, the Division of Infectious Diseases has become one of the finest in the United States.

We provide clinical care to patients with infectious diseases at the NYU Langone Medical Center, the Bellevue Hospital Center, and the Manhattan Veteran's Affairs Medical Center.  The location of our hospitals in close proximity to one another promotes interactions between the faculty, and provides exceptional training to our fellows.  Our faculty and fellows have expertise in diagnosis and treatment of rare and common acute and chronic infectious diseases, and we offer the opportunity for patients with HIV to enroll in clinical trials of new drugs that are not yet widely available.

We have also developed a uniquely-effective program in HIV prevention that has gained wide recognition, and have extended our expertise to West and East Africa. The NYU Division of Infectious Disease continues to grow and gain increasing recognition for its clinical care, outstanding fellowship training, and innovative research, for the good of its patients, its trainees, and the world at large.
