With 12 full-time and 35 voluntary faculty, the NYU Division of Gastroenterology provides a single very high standard of care for all patients at our three teaching hospitals: Tisch Hospital (a voluntary hospital), Bellevue Hospital (a city hospital) and the Veterans Affairs Hospital (a federal government hospital).
In addition to consultative services and routine endoscopies, the division offers:
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography
- Endoscopic ultrasound
- Palliative metal stent placements for biliary, esophageal, and colonic malignancies
- Argon plasma coagulation
- Capsule endoscopy
- Esophageal motility studies
In November 2004, Dr. Morris Traube was recruited from Yale University to head the efforts to establish an Esophageal Disease Center at NYU that focuses on:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Barrett's esophagus
- Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus
- Swallowing diseases
The Esophageal Disease Center will include a clinical service at Tisch offering patients state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of esophageal disorders, and an ongoing program of translational and clinical research in the Divisions of Gastroenterology and Infectious Disease. Eventually, the Esophageal Disease Center will involve other departments as well.
