Research

Under the careful supervision of a mentor, fellows design, implement, and analyze a research question throughout the three years of the fellowship. During the first year of fellowship, trainees are encouraged to meet with the faculty in order to discuss participation in research.

Fellows have an opportunity to perform research in a great variety of gastroenterologic and hepatologic disciplines. Our division is particularly strong in research involving colorectal cancer screening, viral hepatitis, hepatic encephalopathy, the role of adipokines in health and disease, esophageal disease, bile salt physiology, interaction between man and its resident microbes, disparities in healthcare delivery, obesity, GI oncology, and the role of the gastrointestinal mucosa in HIV disease.

It is expected that fellows will engage in scholarly writing, and plan and execute a clinical research project. Fellows are expected to submit the results of their research efforts for presentation at local and national meetings and, if possible, for publication. The NYU Division of Gastroenterology has had enormous success in promoting fellow research.
