When it was formed in 1964, NYU School of Medicine's Division of Gastroenterology consisted of a small group of gastroenterologists at University Hospital. The division's main focus was the Fellowship Training Program, then located at Bellevue Hospital.

In 1993 the Bellevue GI Training Program merged with the NYU-sponsored VA GI Training Program. Over the ensuing years, the number of full-time gastroenterologists in the division has grown from four to twelve. An NYU Faculty Group Practice was established in 2001. Currently, there are five physicians in the Group Practice providing the full range of GI care.
