The role of the Appointments and Promotions Committee is to advise the Chair of the Department of Medicine on the granting of promotions and tenure to eligible candidates among the full-time faculty. The committee is also charged with creating an environment in which the process of granting promotions and tenure is fully understood by the faculty.
Criteria developed by the committee are used by the department's division directors to determine the appropriate faculty title and career path for new appointments. The committee has established a formal periodic review process to assist tenure-track members of the department in attaining their goal of promotion and tenure.
Each junior member of the full-time faculty must select a mentoring committee composed of at least three senior faculty members. The mentors meet at least once a year to provide critical assessment and to assist the junior faculty member in achieving his or her academic goals.
The membership of the Appointments and Promotions Committee, which rotates periodically, is drawn from the ranks of the senior full-time Department of Medicine faculty.
