Emergency Room

All second-year residents complete one block in the emergency room at Bellevue's world-renowned Adult Emergency Service (AES). House officers have the privilege of working as fully integrated members of the ER team in this level I trauma center, where they see an incredible diversity of cases during their four-week block. Each house officer completes eighteen 12-hour shifts (8 a.m.-8 p.m. or 8 p.m.-8 a.m.).

Medical Consultation

The block rotation on medical consultation service are an essential part of the third year of training. These rotations are supervised by fulltime attending physicians who round with the residents daily. The primary focus is the preoperative evalution of surgical patients with medical comorbidities. In addition the medical consult provides advice to all clinical services who care for patients with complex medical problems. Finally, the medical consult is responsible for leading resuscitation efforts at all in-hospital cardiac arrests and interfacing with emergency room in the admission process to the medical service. The formal curriculum in preoperative consultation occurs in the ambulatory rotations in the second and third year.

We have interactive case-based presentations, core didactic lectures, and pathologic-based discussions to name a few. The structure of each conference varies across the three medical institutions, and we like to think that the conferences are shaped by the particular strengths of each campus. Read more
