Selected Educational Activities of the Division

The Generalist Initiative
Convened by Dr. Farber in 1994, chaired by Dr. Lipkin, this group spearheaded the creation of the Skills and Science of Doctoring Course and the Ambulatory Medicine Clerkship, using funding obtained by Dr. Lipkin from NY State.

Physician, Patient and Society course
This is a New York University School of Medicine Course that teaches cores clinical skills and knowledge to first and second year medical students. Many of our residents and faculty participate in it.  

Macy Initiative in Health Communication
Development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive, competency based approach to teaching medical communications, created in partnership with U. Mass and Case Western Reserve's medical schools. Key appointments include:

Pfizer Master Scholars Program (Dean's Office)
Drs. Kalet and Schwartz (Walter Reed Society), and Keller(**Society) were recently appointed Masters of new advisory and educational societies in the SOM; Dr. Lipkin was appointed as a Faculty Scholar.

Annual Faculty Development Seminar Series
Created for generalist faculty in the consortium of NYU hospitals.

Primary Care and Medical Education Grand Rounds
Includes invited speakers on generalist topics.

Task Force on Immigrant Health
Headed by Dr. Gany, this group is the leading group studying, teaching about, and providing community teaching on immigrant health issues in New York.

Program on Survivors of Torture
Headed by Dr. Keller, this program studies and teaches about torture victims and the health sequelae of torture.

National Activities and Awards

  • Dr. Lipkin is Past President and Past Secretary-treasurer of the Society of General Internal Medicine and Founding Chair and President of the American Academy on Physician and Patient
  • Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Faculty Scholars Awards: Drs. Gany and Schwartz have won this most competitive faculty award, one of two programs to get two in the first two years of the program
  • Dr. Sondra Zabar won the 2006 SGIM award for Scholarship in medical education and the 2006 SGIM Mid Atlantic Medical Educator Award
  • Dr. Mark Schwartz won the 2005 SGIM, Mid Atlantic Medical Educator Award.
  • The Rosenthal award of The ACP for "Significant clinical innovation" presented to Dr. Lipkin and the American Academy on Physician and Patient, 1994
  • The Task Force on Immigrant Health has won NYU and New York Public Health Association Awards for Community service
  • For each of the last five years, the Division Faculty have presented pre-courses, workshops, and multiple abstracts at the Society of General Internal Medicine national meeting.
  • Drs. Kalet and Lipkin are on the National Faculty of the American Academy on Physician and Patient and teach several courses nationally each year.
  • Drs. Pearlman and Schacter are FITs.
