Internal Medicine Residency Homepage

Martin J. Blaser, MD,
Chair, NYU Department of Medicine
Dear Colleagues,
Residency training in internal medicine is both a great opportunity and a substantial challenge. The experiences and the skills that are acquired during residency set the tone for the remainder of a physician's career. For those who pursue a career in medicine, the years spent in residency represent a major commitment on their part both to furthering their professional aims and to serving those under their care.
The New York University School of Medicine has a long and distinguished tradition of excellence in internal medicine. Our three residency programs have evolved to train physicians to solve complex clinical and human problems. Our tradition is to provide trainees with the supervision and mentorship they need to assume responsibilities consistent with their improving skills, always stressing the intellectual and humanistic aspects of medicine. Our combined hospitals are a rich and varied source of patients, illnesses, and care settings, making for comprehensive training.
We offer three distinct residency programs. The Categorical Program trains physicians, over three years, for a career in internal medicine; many of our residents then take fellowships in the subspecialties of internal medicine. The Primary Care Program, also a three-year preparation, readies those physicians who want to pursue a career in primary care. The Preliminary Program fulfills the one-year training requirement in internal medicine that is necessary for residencies in other fields, including dermatology, neurology, radiology, and ophthalmology, among others. We have also begun a research track, for physicians committed to a career combining investigation and clinical medicine.
The spirit of our house staff here in the New York University School of Medicine amazes me, and it is a privilege to be involved in their education, as together we care for the ill and the infirm. We welcome your interest in our programs, and hope that we can provide a venue for this next step in your long-term development. Our faculty, house staff, and administrative staff are pleased to assist you with any questions you may have about our programs and their possibilities.
Thank you for your interest.
Sincerely yours,
Martin J. Blaser, M.D.
