Adina Kalet, MD, MPH, graduated from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, was in the first cohort of NYU/Bellevue Primary Care Internal Medicine Residents, a New York Academy of Medicine Bowen-Brooks Fellow, and a graduate of the Robert Woods Johnson Clinical Scholars Program where she received her MPH in Epidemiology. She is a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine and Surgery, Director of Medical Education for the section of Primary Care, Medical Education Advisor to the Surgery Education Center, the Director of Educational Research for the Division of Educational Informatics, Society Master for the Master Scholars Program Walter Reed Society of Public Health and Health Policy at NYU SOM, the founding Director of the Primary Care Public Health Scholars Program at NYU School of Medicine, now run by Dr. Kathleen Hanley and the faculty leader of the Professional Development Portfolio project for UME.

Adina practiced and taught at Gouverneur Diagnostic and Treatment Center for 10 years before becoming the Program Director of the Macy Initiative in Health Communications at NYU, a controlled multi-centered trial of communication skills teaching. Since then she has been instrumental in developing and implementing innovative curricular changes in undergraduate and graduate curricula which prepare future physicians for practice in medically underserved communities. She is the PI on a number of ongoing curriculum development and evaluation projects and has written extensively and consulted nationally and internationally on issues of clinical skills evaluation, faculty development, professionalism assessment and psychosocial aspects of medicine. In addition as the Medical Education Advisor to the Department of Surgery’s Surgery Education Center she is co-PI on an NSF funded study of the Web Initiatives in Surgical Education (WISE-MD) study which is a comprehensive computer assisted curriculum likely to become the national standard curriculum for the core surgery clerkship. She wrote her first R01 in June 2006.

Along with her colleagues in DGIM, Adina has published a series of papers describing rigorous evaluations of new PC curriculum initiatives and rigorously evaluated the use of computer assisted instruction to address psychosocial aspects of patient care. With funding for a HRSA Academic Administrative Unit, she recently formed the Research on Medical Education Outcomes (ROMEO) unit, a group of dedicated cross-disciplinary faculty researchers (Drs. Zabar, Gillespie, Jay, Lee, Paik, Triola) seeking to raise the bar of medical education research by linking education and health services research and studying how educational interventions lead to long-term outcomes in learners and patients. We have begun populating the Database for Research on Education in Academic Medicine (DREAM) which is a “Framingham style” longitudinal repository/registry of educational outcome data spanning UME, GME and eventually CME to which we hope to add patient important data in the future.

Along with Mitch Charap and funding from the Merrin family, Adina has designed and implemented the Merrin Family Bedside Teaching Program a rich, in-depth Department of IM Faculty Development program. This program, now in its second phase seeks to support motivated clinician educators in pursuing advanced study and scholarly work that will enhance the quality of the bedside teaching for peers, residents and students. Contributors to the project so far have been Ellen Pearlman, Regina Janicik, Joe Rabatin, Tan Ping Wong, Greg Mints and Sabrina Felson.

Dr. Kalet loves working for and with others who want to make the world a better place almost as much as she loves her husband (guess who?) 2 children, 2 guinea pigs and her dog. And by the way she has written about balancing work and personal life as well—those who can’t do….
