Brian Elbel received his PhD in health policy with a concentration in health economics from Yale University. He studies consumer and patient decision making regarding their health and health care, largely from the perspective of behavioral economics and bounded rationality. As an example, his recent work utilized both experimental and econometric techniques to examine how Medicare beneficiaries respond to the health plan choices available to them. As consumers/patients are increasingly involved in the delivery of their health care, he plans to continue studying how they respond to this trend, as well as how we might better assist them in their decision making. Additionally, he is examining choices that influence health more directly, including how individuals choose which foods to consume. In addition to his primary appointment in Division, he also has an academic appointment with the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Dr. Elbel’s work has been funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Science Foundation and the Russell Sage Foundation. |
