Dr. John Chelico’s research experience and expertise is in medical informatics and the use of electronic health records. His particular interest is in clinical data warehousing and the secondary use of electronic health record information for clinical research and quality improvement in healthcare. He is the Assistant Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation South Manhattan Healthcare Network. He is also a clinical instructor and practicing internal medicine physician in the NYU School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine. Additionally, he has an active role in the Center for Health and Bioinformatics at the NYU Medical Center and teaches an Introduction to Medical Informatics course at the NYU School of Medicine.

Dr. Chelico an investigator in a NIH/NLM funded applied informatics grant which aims to create a web service based computerized decision support engine that can deliver patient specific preventive care recommendations at the point of care. The primary objectives behind his project include: 1) Preventive health management and outcomes can be improved by using computerized decision support. 2) A standards-based system can be developed that would be able to accept relevant clinical information from diverse Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, centrally process the information based on current, evidence-based guidelines and return the information to the EHR system in the appropriate format. 3) A well-designed system will encourage use by providers, integration into clinical workflow, and improved compliance with guidelines.

Dr. Chelico is a graduate of New York University where he studied Computer Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He attended medical school at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and was residency trained in Internal Medicine at the NYU affiliated, North Shore University Hospital in Long Island, New York. Dr. Chelico also completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship and Masters Degree in Biomedical Informatics at the Columbia University Medical Center. During his fellowship he became intricately involved with the re-architecture of the clinical data warehouse for the NewYork Presbyterian Healthcare System. Dr. Chelico is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is currently a practicing hospitalist at the Bellevue Hospital Center in New York, NY and Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY.
