Bellevue Hospital leads in improving patient care with electronic health records

Andrew Wallach, MD, explains how Bellevue Hospital is leading in the introduction of electronic health records.

The federal stimulus bill signed by President Obama in February, 2009, will direct more than $17 billion to hospitals and private physician practices that are considered meaningful users of electronic health records (EHR).

New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) anticipates that these federal stimulus funds will provide up to $121 million to help support the next generation of advanced EHR system used by HHC since 1991. NYU/Bellevue’s Dr. Andrew Wallach recently demonstrated the special features of the HHC EHR for NY1 News.

These features include computerized physician order entry, built-in computer prompts to guide best-practice care for each patient and ways to use data to improve patient safety, better manage patients with chronic disease and improve health outcomes. Currently, less than 10% of hospitals in the U.S. have such a fully-developed system.
