Dr. Katz’s interests include clinical applications of echocardiography. Much of his work has focused on the impact of transesophageal echocardiography in the operating room and the prevention of stroke in patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery, a major morbidity of otherwise successful surgery. In 1992 Dr. Katz authored a seminal publication which identified aortic atherosclerotic plaque as the major factor causing stroke during bypass surgery and suggested altering surgical techniques in order to minimize the risk of stroke. In addition to practicing echocardiography in the laboratories at Tisch Hospital and Bellevue Hospital, Dr. Katz has been the Director of the John Wykoff Cardiology Clinic, the oldest cardiology clinic in America, for the past ten years. He has a strong history of teaching at all level of medical training.
