Physician-Investigator Pathway

A four or five year training experience designed for highly motivated and focused individuals who ultimately seek to establish independent careers as basic, translational or clinical physician-scientists. Individuals interested in this research-intensive training program devote considerable dedicated time to biomedical investigation, with the longer-term goal of obtaining full-time, tenure track faculty positions at academic medical centers. We expect that most trainees in this program will first complete two years of clinical Cardiology training, followed by a two-three year research experience.

Applicants interested in the Physician-Investigator Pathway should apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), indicating their potential interest in this pathway on the application forms. Please be assured that this is not a binding commitment on your part. The most promising trainees in this Pathway will be eligible to participate in our NIH Sponsored T32 Training Program in Cardiovascular Sciences during the research training portion of their fellowship. This program provides a highly structured and mentored training environment designed to promote the career development of academic physician-scientists.

Basic Science Track

During the investigative phase of this Track, trainees will formulate and vigorously pursue a significant research project under the mentorship of an established investigator at NYU School of Medicine, from either within the Division of Cardiology or another academic unit. They also will participate in the outpatient Cardiology continuity clinic and various educational activities including seminars, lectures and workshops. During the clinical phase, trainees acquire the requisite clinical knowledge-base and procedural skills to function as outstanding consultative cardiovascular specialists and educators.

At the end of the training program, fellows will have completed all of the requirements of our ACGME-accredited training program in Cardiovascular Disease and will be eligible to sit for the ABIM Certifying Examination. Fellows in this pathway are expected to submit K-level grant proposals to the NIH or other agencies during the last year of their training program. A small number of carefully chosen individuals in the Basic Science Track may seek additional sub-specialty training in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Interventional Cardiology or Heart Failure. Individuals interested in the Basic Science Track may wish to contact Dr. Glenn I. Fishman, Director of the Division of Cardiology, to discuss their candidacy.

Clinical Investigator Track

This pathway is designed for individuals interested in embarking upon careers as independent clinical/translational investigators and educators. Typically, during the investigative years, fellows will pursue the NYU Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation degree program, with its relevant course work in biostatistics and clinical trial design. Under the auspices of faculty members from our Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center, trainees will become exposed to the portfolio of projects ongoing within the Division of Cardiology. They will then identify a mentor and formulate an area of investigation that will be intensively pursued for their masters degree thesis, creating a solid foundation for a career in clinical investigation. They will also participate in Cardiology continuity clinic and various educational activities including seminars, lectures and worskshops. The clinical years will afford trainees in this pathway the requisite knowledge-base and procedural skills to function as outstanding consultative cardiovascular specialists.

At the end of the four-year period, trainees will have completed all of the requirements of our ACGME-accredited training program in Cardiovascular Disease and will be eligible to sit for the ABIM Certifying Examination. As part of their training in this pathway, fellows will prepare and submit a K-level grant proposal for funding to agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (i.e., a K23 Patient Oriented Training Award) or the American Heart Association. As with the Basic Science Track, a small number of carefully chosen individuals in the Clinical Investigator Track may seek additional sub-specialty training in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Interventional Cardiology or Heart Failure. Individuals interested in the Clinical Investigator Track should contact Dr. Judith S. Hochman, Director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center or Dr. Stuart Katz, Director of the NYU Heart Failure Program, to discuss their candidacy.
