Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease Rotation Schedule

The Fellowship Training Program in Cardiovascular Disease curriculum is carefully structured to provide a progressive learning experience, wherein required clinical laboratory training is the focus of the first several rotations. This schedule, created by faculty in the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology, imparts the “tools of our trade” in preparation for patient management.

Fellows advance from beginning catheterization experience at NYU Langone’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in the first year to greater responsibility at the NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue laboratory during the second year.

The consultation services at NYU Langone provide a basic experience in cardiovascular assessment and treatment that gives way to more complex and demanding evaluation and management responsibilities at Bellevue and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System during the second or third year of training. The initial heart failure rotations concentrate on evaluation and management of patients before transplant and using ventricular assist devices, while subsequent experiences teach the management of transplant patients. Similarly, progressive curricula characterize the experience in echocardiography, cardiac electrophysiology, and nuclear cardiology.

Dedicated research time is introduced during the first year of the program, with larger blocks afforded during the third year of the clinician–educator pathway and the last two years the physician–investigator pathway.

Our program offers elective time for additional procedural training in the clinical laboratory experiences, providing fellows with a competitive edge for advanced training in interventional cardiology, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, and advanced imaging.

Elective time can also be used for dedicated training in preventive cardiology, adult congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, vascular medicine, noninvasive imaging, and cardiovascular surgery. Additional, non-traditional training is available by arrangement and approval by the program director.
