Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship
The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship, offered by NYU Langone’s Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology, was founded more than three decades ago and was one of the first to receive accreditation from the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Successful completion of this two-year program leads to eligibility for the American Board of Internal Medicine’s certification exam in clinical cardiac electrophysiology.
Fellowship Aims
The overarching goal of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship is to develop clinical, research, and educational leaders in the field of electrophysiology.
Our program aims to provide fellows with the knowledge and skills requisite for the pursuit of an academic investigative career and the performance of advanced electrophysiologic procedures. Our physicians in training become medical educators and clinical practitioners with a facility for lifelong learning and leadership capabilities in a rapidly changing professional landscape. Fellows also learn to advance the application of new technologies within the field of cardiac electrophysiology, as they participate in multiple and varied areas of research.
Fellowship Curriculum
Our training program provides a comprehensive curriculum combining didactics, simulation, one-on-one procedural training, and a robust research environment. We offer many unique opportunities for research in basic, translational, and clinical electrophysiology, including molecular and cellular studies, genetic engineering for arrhythmia therapy, studies with large animals, human genetic studies, and numerous investigator initiated and international clinical research trials.
Fellowship Rotations
Fellows train at NYU Langone’s Kimmel Pavilion, our primary site, where faculty see complex cases and conduct intricate procedures in six state-of-the-art hybrid labs combining advanced electrophysiology and operating capabilities. Fellows also train at the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, the cardiac referral center for all VA hospitals from Connecticut to Philadelphia; and NYC + Health Hospitals/Bellevue, the flagship hospital and cardiac referral center for NYC Health + Hospitals Corporation. Within these facilities, trainees have access to advanced technologies, which allow for fully integrated and optimized patient care.
During training, fellows achieve competence in the following procedures:
- supraventricular tachycardia ablation
- atrial fibrillation and flutter ablation
- idiopathic ventricular tachycardia ablation
- ventricular tachycardia ablation for structural heart disease
- pacemaker implantation
- implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation
- cardiac resynchronization therapy
- epicardial approaches to ablation
- intracardiac imaging
- lead extractions
- left atrial appendage occlusion
Each of our clinical sites offer a unique educational experience and a diverse patient population, preparing fellows for practice in private, public, community, and federal hospital settings. A team of full-time academic cardiac electrophysiologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses amply supports the services at each venue.
Fellowship Didactic Training
Fellows also have opportunities to attend several conferences and lecture series. The Cardiac Electrophysiology Core Curriculum Lecture Series takes place at the beginning of the academic year, teaching fellows how to address arrhythmia emergencies and helping them to develop a basic understanding of electrophysiology.
The Cardiac Electrophysiology Conference is a weekly didactic conference that follows our core curriculum and provides an in-depth understanding of electrophysiology concepts and their application. At the daily Electrophysiology Management and Mortality and Morbidity Conference, all members of the service convene to review previous cases and consults across the three medical centers.
At the Electrophysiology Journal Club, fellows present and review recently published articles that advance the understanding of clinical care and electrophysiologic principles. Trainees also attend the Cardiology Clinical Case Conference and Cardiology Grand Rounds.
Fellowship Research
Fellows who want to purse an investigative career can devote substantial time toward the completion of one or more research projects during training. Research areas include cellular mechanisms of arrhythmia, the biophysics of lesion formation, optimization of clinical ablation outcomes, and leadless pacemaker development. Research is coupled with extensive and progressive didactics throughout training to combine faculty- and fellow-driven education. Fellows may spend up to three years in cardiac electrophysiology training equally divided between research and clinical work.

How to Apply
Applications for the three available positions are accepted beginning July 1 via the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®), with ERAS® program code: 1543532049. Applications are due by August 31.
Applicants must submit the following materials:
- an ERAS® application form
- a CV
- a personal statement
- three letters of recommendation, including one from the program director or department chair of the applicant’s current program
- an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates® certificate (international medical graduates only)
- a U.S. Medical Licensing Examination® transcript
Interviews are held September through October. All interviews are being held virtually this year. Selection of fellows is through the National Residency Matching Program® (NRMP)®.
