
April 2009--Dr. Adina Kalet has been selected as the winner of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Associate Professor of Medicine and Surgery for her work as a leader in the promotion of humanistic medicine and professionalism in medical education.
"The Gold Foundation defines the attributes of a humanistic doctor as respect for a patient's concerns and values and as compassionate consideration and care for a patient's physical and emothional well-being," writes the foundation's president and CEO, Sandra O. Gold in her letter announcing the award. "The goal of the award," she continues, "is to honor and support faculty at the Assistant or Associate Professor level who embody these characteristics through clinical practice, teaching, mentorship and scholarship including research and curriculum development.
"Dr. Kalet's demonstrated commitment to the ideals of humanism is evidenced by her innovative work to develop and assess professionalism and humanism in students and residents. As a role model and teacher, Dr. Kalet is ensuring that her students will be prepared to provide patient-centered care."
The letter announcing the award and its generous financial grant distributed over a three-year period concludes: "The Gold Foundation is proud to support Dr. Kalet and her important work that will help shape our future doctors and improve patient care. We look forward to learning of Dr. Kalet's accomplishments, and those of NYU, to foster humanism in medicine."
