Remembrance of Milena L. Lewis, MD

Message from Chair of the Department of Medicine,
Martin J. Blaser, MD

Dear Colleagues,

Milena L. Lewis M.D., known to all as "Millie" Lewis, died last Thursday, Oct 29, 2009.  She had been Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and was 78 at the time of her death.

Dr. Lewis had been Chief of the Pulmonary Disease Section at the VA for more than 10 years beginning in 1990.  She graduated Magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr, received her MD from Columbia, and was a housestaff physician at Bellevue beginning in 1954, continuing on the staff until 1968. She was affiliated with the New York VA Medical Center from 1963, and she joined the NYU Faculty in 1986. She served as Chief of the Pulmonary Disease Section at the VA from 1990 until the time of her retirement.

Dr. William Rom, Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, remembers her as a member of the world-class Bellevue Cardiopulmonary Laboratory.  She pioneered quantitative radiocardiography with Andre Cournand, and published with Yale Enson and RM Harvey on hypoxia, metabolic acidosis, and the pulmonary circulation in the 1960s.

She will be missed by her many colleagues and former fellows.

Sincerely,
Martin J. Blaser, MD
