The following message was sent to the faculty of the Department of Medicine from Martin J. Blaser, M.D. Chair, Department of Medicine; Steven B. Abramson, M.D. Vice Dean for Education, Faculty and Academic Affairs; and Robert I. Grossman, M.D. Dean, School of Medicine NYU Langone Medical Center:
Dear Colleagues,
We are saddened to inform you of the death of Dr. Clement E. Marks yesterday, who died at the age of 72 at his home in Chester, Connecticut.
Clem was born in Pennsylvania. After graduating from Dartmouth (1958) and Columbia P & S (1962), Clem began his long association with NYU starting with his internship in 1962. After his service in the Army and his residency in Medicine, Clem served as Chief Resident, and Senior Chief Resident in Medicine, and as a Fellow in Pulmonary Diseases with Dr. Roberta Goldring.
Clem’s career on our faculty was marked by his devotion to the teaching of students and housestaff. Clem was a charismatic and inspirational teacher in the third-year Medicine clerkship, who was revered by his students. Clem also served for many years on the Admissions Committee for the School of Medicine.
Clem was a devoted physician to his many patients. As his terminal illness was advancing, he helped arrange the placement of his long-time patients with other NYU physicians. Clem retired as Clinical Professor of Medicine.
In keeping with his wishes, Clem’s death will be celebrated by a party of his friends in Connecticut rather than by a funeral.
He will be missed.
Sincerely yours,
Martin J. Blaser, M.D.
