At
NYU the rich investigative work of the departments and the numerous institutes,
special programs, and research initiatives are devoted to advancing science
in the service of patients, through new approaches to the diagnosis, treatment,
and prevention of disease.
NYU is placing a new emphasis on five major research areas—cardiovascular disease, cancer, infectious disease, the neurosciences, and genetics—that collectively address today’s major challenges in medicine worldwide. In each of these areas, outstanding new faculty members are being recruited to lead the next generation of scientists and to build an even stronger foundation for progress.
Among the School’s many centers of research excellence is the Skirball Institute for Biomolecular Medicine. Skirball is organized on a thematic, rather than departmental, basis to encourage collaboration. This makes it an especially fertile environment for pursuing creative, leading- edge research. Basic and clinical research studies are also under way at other nationally recognized institutes within NYU. They include the Center for AIDS Research, the William and Sylvia Silberstein Institute for Aging and Dementia, the NYU Child Study Center, the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, the Institue of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, and the Nelson Environmental Institute. NYU’s partnership with Bellevue Hospital Center provides another rich vein for research. The partnership has not only made available superb services to many people who might not otherwise have access to them, but has also yielded medical innovations in areas such as severed limb reattachment, tissue transplantation, heart attack, autism, psychosis, sleep disorder, AIDS, lupus, and others. As testimony to the high caliber of its researchers, NYU attracts an impressive and growing level of government funding for its research projects.
Overall, NYU provides extraordinary opportunities for medical students to engage in basic and clinical research in order to advance scientific knowledge and apply it to patient care.
