A new strategic alliance with Siemens Medical Solutions U.S.A., Inc., promises to vault the School of Medicine into the front ranks of academic medical centers for imaging in clinical care and scientific research.
By 2007, NYU Medical Center will have approximately 100 state-of-the-art clinical
imaging machines. These will include some of the most powerful magnetic resonance
(MR) systems available for research, such as the high-resolution 7-tesla magnet
that can scan the entire body. Among the other diagnostic tools the Medical Center
will receive are two hybrid positron emission tomography/computed tomography
(PET/CT) scanners; six rapid multi-slice CT scanners; digital X-ray, mammography,
and ultrasound machines. A picture archival and communication system has enabled
physicians to replace traditional films with digital computer scans both in the
operating rooms on the patient floors and in offices.
