All donors, whether anonymous or directed, must pass very strict, comprehensive screening procedures that are mandated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the New York State Department of Health, and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

When a woman requests information on becoming either an anonymous or directed NYU egg donor, she is directed to complete an application containing an extensive questionnaire detailing personal and family social and medical history. Physical attributes such as hair, eye and skin color, height, weight, education, honors, hobbies and motivations for donating are indicated.

Upon preliminary approval of the medical staff, the potential donor will have three formal screening sessions:

• Medical – Includes a complete physical examination, testing for HIV, hepatitis, sexually transmitted disease and screening for drug use.
  
  
• Psychological – Testing and an interview with one of our psychologists are required.
  
  
• Genetic – Testing and an interview with a genetic counselor are also required.

Re-testing the egg donor for infectious disease immediately preceding the egg donation cycle is mandated by the FDA.
