Directed Egg Donors

A directed donor can be a blood relative, family member, or friend – preferably between 21 and 34 years of age. All donors, whether anonymous or directed, must pass our very strict, comprehensive screening procedures that are mandated by the FDA, the NYS Department of Health and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Directed Donor

Loved ones are often thrilled to help you experience the happiness of carrying and delivering a baby and, in the case of blood relatives, allow you to increase the number of shared biological characteristics that you will have with your child. This is sometimes preferred to using donated eggs from a non-relative, which mean the child will not be biologically related to the mother.

Some prospective mothers find knowing the biological mother to be a comfort, however it can be a source of great difficulties for others. That is why all recipients and recipient couples entering our program are required to meet with one of our psychologists. In addition, becoming an egg donor requires a huge commitment, which can deter your friends or family from taking part in the process. The donor screening process takes two-to-three weeks, with an additional three-to-four weeks for the egg donation process.
