The Hassenfeld Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is a world-renowned
leader in the development and delivery of innovative treatment programs for
infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with malignant brain tumors.
These treatment programs emphasize the use of radical surgical resection
and aggressive chemotherapy to improve the cure rate, while avoiding the
use of brain radiation therapy and its sometimes debilitating side effects
on the brain. Its treatment programs include:
• chemotherapy-only program for children under 10
years of age who are newly diagnosed with malignant brain tumors;
• an internationally conducted, Hassenfeld-based
chemotherapy-only program for patients with germ-cell tumors of the brain;
• a megadose chemotherapy program, with marrow cell
rescue, for patients with recurrent malignant brain tumors; and
• an intensive chemo-radiotherapy program for older
children and adults with high-risk neuro-ectodermal tumors and ependymomas.
Grounded in a multidisciplinary approach to healing (often involving neuro-oncology,
pediatric neurosurgery, and radiation therapy physicians), the Hassenfeld
Center features a highly trained team of medical, nursing, psychology, and
social work staff, many of whom are bilingual.
