For more than 50 years, the cardiovascular specialists and research scientists
at NYU Langone Medical Center have been innovators and leaders in the pursuit of
high-quality cardiovascular research, practice, and education. Among their
many achievements, these researchers determined the value of digitalis in
the treatment of congestive heart failure and streptokinase in the treatment
of myocardial infarction, as well as pioneering the first clinical uses of
electrophysiology. Their ongoing participation in numerous randomized clinical
trials will undoubtedly yield additional advances in cardiac catheterization
and electrophysiology.
Its cardiovascular surgeons are internationally recognized for their contributions
to the field of minimally invasive heart surgery. Among those, in 1996, they
performed the world's first port-access triple bypass and the first port-access
mitral valve repair. Since that time, the cardiovascular team at NYU Langone Medical
Center has performed more than 1,500 minimally invasive surgeries - the highest
volume of experience by any group worldwide. NYU continues to be an international
leader in surgical research; as part of an FDA clinical trial in 2000, the
first robot-assisted mitral repair procedure was performed. International
developments include academic exchange programs in China, Oman, and India.
