Established more than 25 years ago, the NYU Cancer Institute
was one of the original cancer centers supported by and designated as "comprehensive" by
the National Cancer Institute. The NYU Cancer Institute's mission is to support
its world-class scientists in their work conducting groundbreaking research
and to translate their discoveries rapidly into improved medical care for
its patients. In its clinical care, the Cancer Institute emphasizes a multidisciplinary
approach, bringing together all the disciplines involved in oncology - including
surgery, medicine, and radiation - to determine the best course of treatment
for each patient. The Cancer Institute also provides an educational setting,
where local, national, and international care providers can learn about the
continuum of care, from prevention and screening, to diagnosis and treatment,
to rehabilitation.
The Cancer Institute specializes in the treatment and management of women's
cancers (breast and reproductive tract); cancers affecting the head, neck,
and lungs; brain and other neurological cancers; and cancers of the urinary
and gastrointestinal tracts.
Specially trained nurses, a dietician, and psychosocial counselors staff
a dedicated inpatient unit, serving patients and providing support to family
members. At the Cancer Institute's ambulatory care centers, additional dedicated
professional and support staff help patients throughout their entire cancer
experience. They are also available to provide second opinions.
