Hepatitis B is estimated to affect 400 million children and
adults worldwide; yet it remains a relatively unknown, silent killer
that can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. American-born children
have been vaccinated against Hepatitis B since 1982, but lack of preventive
care has left many adults and foreign-born children without similar
protection.
The B Free, C Free, HIV Free Campaign will reach out to New York City's
Latin American, Caribbean, Asian American, African, and Eastern European
immigrant communities who are at higher risk for hepatitis B and for
co-infection with hepatitis C and HIV. The Campaign will help alleviate
the disproportionate burden of these diseases through awareness, screening,
vaccination, and follow-up care.
