B Free, C Free, HIV Free

Hepatitis B is estimated to affect 400 million children and adults worldwide, yet remains a relatively unknown, silent killer that can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. American-born children have been vaccinated against hepatitis B since 1982, but a lack of preventive care has left many adults and foreign-born children without similar protection.

The Asian American Hepatitis B Program (AAHBP) was founded in 2004 with funding from the New York City Council. It is a coalition of New York City institutions and residents dedicated to reducing the disproportionate burden of the Hepatitis B infection on the Asian American community through outreach, education, screening, vaccinations, and follow-up care.

The AAHBP also conducts collaborative research in the epidemiology of hepatitis B infection in New York City’s communities, outcome evaluation and policy development. In 2006 the AAHBP expanded its outreach and services to the Latin American, Caribbean, African, and Eastern European immigrant communities in New York City who are at higher risk for hepatitis B and co-infection with hepatitis C and HIV.

The B Free, C Free, HIV Free Campaign will feature cultural events for adults and youth in all five boroughs, combined with community education, free screening and preventive vaccinations (for hepatitis B), confidential counseling, and treatment referrals for those in need.
