1) How do I transfer my patient to Bellevue, Tisch, or the VA?

Bellevue Hospital

  • The physician from the sending facility or the in-house physician who has accepted the transfers starts the transfer process by calling our Transfer Coordinating Center at (212) 562-6458. The physician should give the Name of the Facility, Name of Patient, Sex, Age, Location of the Patient, Diagnosis, Referring Physician name and specialty, referring physician phone number or pager. The TCC contacts the specific on-call attending physician of the service via pager and will arrange for transport if the patient is coming from an HHC facility.

Tisch Hospital

  • Transfers into Tisch require an accepting attending physician with privileges at NYU Hospitals Center.

  • The first step is identifying an accepting attending physician. The accepting physician calls or faxes a request for transfer to the Pre-Admitting Nurse in Tisch Admitting (Patient Access) at 263-7014, or 263-5005, fax 38960. A resident can begin this process, but we'll need verification from the accepting physician that they are accepting the patient.

  • The information we need to evaluate a candidate for transfer include their name, social security number, and date of birth, their insurance information (or a phone number where we can obtain this information), their current location and a phone number there where we can verify the patient's clinical status.

  • We are required to verify several points prior to a transfer: that the insurance company verifies coverage, and, if needed, authorizes payment for transfer, or that other payment arrangements are feasible; that the patient clinically requires transfer to Tisch (meets medical necessity criteria for reimbursement, is not medically futile, can be discharged when ready to an appropriate setting), and that a bed at an appropriate level of care is available.

  • We are here to work with you to facilitate the process of transfer, to jump these specific mandated hurdles, and get your patients the care they need. We ask for your patience and your help. If you require additional assistance or explanations, please call Steven Weiner, Senior Director of Patient Access, 263-0776, pager 917-205-4359, or Mary Lawson, Director, at 263-0463, or a supervisor at 263-5005.

VA Medical Center

  • It's ideal to use another VA site for services that aren't offered at the Manhattan VA; transferring to a non-VA hospital can be quite difficult.

  • Transfers to a non-VA site must be approved by a VA physician without ties to the referred to institution to avoid the appearance of or actual conflict of interests.

  • Dr. Mort Weissfelner (acting chief ER) is the point person in NY. He also approves transfers from other VAs or for veterans currently hospitalized at a private or public institution who need to come to our VA.
