Resident Concerns or Complaints

The NYU School of Medicine is committed to maintaining an environment that is supportive and conducive to learning. As such, open communication with our house staff is of utmost importance. In the event that an individual would like to discuss or report a concern or complaint, there are numerous opportunities for residents to do so, either directly or anonymously.

  • With the establishment of the House Staff Council in the fall of 2000, a new tradition has evolved at NYU for the regular involvement of house staff in all issues pertaining to graduate medical education. Since its inception, the Council has been instrumental in providing a forum for an open discussion of resident concerns. With active participation of house staff council members at the GMEC and on all GMEC subcommittees, residents have routine access to the administration for the airing of grievances and problems. House staff council leadership is in regular contact with the DIO and Senior Assistant Dean for GME, and through her, Vice Dean Levin and Dean/CEO Glickman. The House Staff Council was instrumental in the formation of the Resident Well Being Committee which was specifically formed to provide residents a forum where they may raise and resolve issues without fear of intimidation or retaliation. The House Staff Council meets the first Wednesday of each month, at 6PM in HCC confrence room A.
  • Through ResWeb all residents have access to the GMEC Well Being Subcommittee's Grievance Module, which allows for the anonymous reporting of complaints, grievances, or concerns. This site is tracked via a key-coded password, monitored by members of the House Staff Well Being Committee. Cases are forwarded to the Dean's Office for GME, the House Staff Affairs Office, and subsequently to other appropriate office or department for resolution. When appropriate, issues are forwarded to the GMEC or appropriate designee for resolution.
  • The Internal Review process provides time for house staff officers to report in confidence any issues or concerns they may have with the training program and/or faculty to the members of the Internal Review subcommittee, including the Assistant Dean for GME and the Director of the House Staff Affairs Office. This forum has been especially conducive to opening lines of communication and surfacing issues that, through active engagement of the house staff involved and the House Staff Council leadership, have resulted in immediate and direct action, including changes in faculty and program leadership.
  • A Compliance Hotline (1-866-NYU-1212) is also available to all members of the institution to allow for the confidential, anonymous reporting of activities that are contrary to hospital and School of Medicine regulations and policies such as violations of resident duty hours, any form of harassment, HIPAA violations, etc. Residents are reminded of, and encouraged to use this Hot Line on a regular basis.
  • When residents rotate onto the Bellevue Hospital pay line, they are also represented by a union, the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) that has additional avenues for the redress of grievances within its policies developed through collective bargaining.
  • Residents may contact their Program Director or Carol Bernstein, M.D., the Senior Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education to discuss any issues of concern.
