Let’s face it- being a resident is tough--The long nights on call, the constant pages, the demanding work hours—it can be enough to drive anyone to exhaustion! Does it ever lead you to wonder, “While I take care of patients, who is taking care of me!?!” The answer to that question, at least in part, is the NYU Housestaff Council.
The NYU Housestaff Council represents the interests of residents in every department, at all NYU affiliated hospitals, including Tisch, Bellevue, the VA, and Joint Diseases. By serving as an advisory body to the Dean of the School of Medicine, we advocate for resident concerns and to help influence policy on such topics as:
- Resident housing
- Resident benefits
- Resident book fund
- Resident work hours
|
- Housestaff mixers
- Ancillary staffing
- Safety concerns
- Technology usage

The Housestaff Council has prepared this Survival Guide in order to guide you through some of the more confusing nuances of being a resident at NYU. All of the chapters below were written by residents, for residents. We hope that you find them helpful!
If you are have questions or concerns that are not covered in this guide, please email the Housestaff Council at . Alternately, you may speak to your Housestaff Council Rep
In addition, if you have a specific concern that you would rather not address through your fellow residents, please consider using the Housestaff Grievance website [link]. This is a confidential service where you can submit a grievance or complaint of harassment of any sort or any grievance that you may have about your experience at the Medical Center.
You should always feel free to join the Housestaff Council. Our meetings are every first Wednesday of the month at 6pm in HCC 15A.
