Getting around the hospitals- security shuttle, NYU shuttle, transportation benefits
One of the advantages of an NYU residency is the opportunity to rotate between three (and sometimes more) hospitals. The patient populations at Tisch, Bellevue, and the VA are very different and they all offer different opportunities for learning. Fortunately, the three hospitals are located within close proximity to each other as they are all in a row down First Avenue between 34th and 23rd Streets. Tisch is between 31st and 34th, Bellevue is on 27th, and the VA is on 23rd.
Most of the time, the mode of transportation between the three institutions will be walking. However, at night, there is a security shuttle that is available to transport you between the hospitals, and for those who take call from home, the shuttle will pick you up and bring you to the hospital as long as you live within a reasonable distance. The security shuttle is currently available between 11pm and 6am and to use it, you simply call the Tisch Security office at 212-263-5038.

For those residents who live south of the medical center or in Greenwich Village, or for those that want to take advantage of any of the NYU undergraduate facilities, there is a free shuttle bus between Tisch and the undergrad campus. Schedule information can be found on the NYU undergraduate website at http://www.nyu.edu/public.safety/transportation. Route E runs between Tisch hospital and 715 Broadway ( Washington Place) and all you need to ride is you ID badge. It makes multiple stops along the way.
There is also a shuttle available from the between the new NYU Cancer Institute on 33 rd and Park and Tisch which runs between 9:20 and 3pm, and goes continuously every 20 minutes.
Although most residents live within a short distance of the medical center, some do commute. For those residents who have a daily commute, NYU offers a program called the Commuter Spending Account (CSA) which allows you to allocate pre-tax money towards paying for bus/train/ferry passes and/or parking. The transit passes for the bus, train, etc. can be purchased online and will be mailed to you. For more information on this program, you can go to http://med.nyu.edu/hr/benefits.
