You can email your questions to housing@med.nyu.edu
When you have accepted a position and are filling out the
housing application, please be aware of the following:
- The form should be filled out legibly and completely
and the required documentation of your household size (unless
you are single) must accompany the application when you
submit it. Please do not submit these separately.
- If you provide on the form an indication of what you
would prefer to pay in rent, please tell us the actual
amount you can afford to pay, not the least you would prefer
to pay. It is a given that every housing applicant
would prefer the largest apartment closest to the Medical
Center for the least amount of money. If you put
a maximum amount of $1600 and you can really pay up to
$1800, you will miss some opportunities.
- Please note that the rental prices on the building list
are subject to increase.
- Be sure to provide your email address in the space
provided on the application. The primary means of
communication with you regarding your application for
medical center housing will be via email. If you
will be traveling or will not have access to email, it
is important that you designate someone to access your
email. If that is not possible, at the very least
please put an auto-reply on your email account when you
are unavailable so we will know that you are temporarily
not available. Otherwise, we will assume that no response
means ‘not interested.’
Faxed applications can be very difficult to read, so use
dark ink, print legibly (especially phone numbers
and email address) and call us to make sure the fax came
through and that we can read it. It is important that
you notify us if your phone numbers, address, or email addresses
change or if you will be out of touch for a period of time. Should
an offer be made, we will have to cancel it if we do not
receive a response by a designated deadline.
Due to the high demand for Medical Center housing that far
exceeds our supply, please be aware that regretfully, most
house staff will not be made offers of Medical Center housing.
If you will be incoming house staff and
are interested in housing when you start work on July 1,
please submit your housing application as soon after the
Match as possible. Applications and related documents must
be submitted as hard copies, not as email attachments. If
you are still interested in obtaining or changing Medical
Center housing after August 1 of the year you start work,
you will need to reapply on or after August 1 to
go on what is unfortunately a long waiting list. If you have
any questions about your application, please email them to
housing@med.nyu.edu
Current staff: We are
happy to add your name to our waiting list. Be sure
to update your application if your contact information (phone
and email address) or housing preferences change.
Housing applications will also be shared with our OCHAP
(Off Campus Housing Assistance Program) staff.

Off- Campus Housing Assistance Program (OCHAP)
OCHAP is a service specifically created
to assist you in navigating the challenging New York City
apartment market.
The office staff provides assistance in identifying housing
in the private sector. The OCHAP office
and website also provide information on neighborhoods, transportation
options, and other issues related to living in New York City.
OCHAP establishes and maintains relationships
with landlords and brokers who have desirable housing inventory,
and provides a resource with information about rental opportunities,
including apartments that do not require brokers’ fees.
General services provided to Medical Center staff:
- Remote access to the Housing Registry, which provides
a listing of no-fee apartments in and around Manhattan.
- Reduced -fee brokerage services with established companies
offering a special rate to NYU affiliates.
- A rent guarantor program to assist house staff with meeting
landlords’ financial requirements; there are limits
on the rental amounts that can be guaranteed. Please
inquire.
Additionally, an area of the OCHAP website
is restricted to house staff and requires a password for
access. You will receive your Kerbos I.D., e-mail
account and password from House Staff Affairs after you have
accepted employment.
The OCHAP Office (located at 339 East 28th
Street, within the Housing Services office)
is open Monday to Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm. This resource
provides one-on-one personal assistance, live terminals,
real estate publications and local periodicals, to facilitate
access to market information and apartment opportunities.
If you are interested in personalized OCHAP services,
please call and make an appointment with our manager. During
the spring housing season, weekend appointments are available.
Please feel free to forward any questions you may have to
our OCHAP e-mail address: ochap@med.nyu.edu
or call us at 212 263 3860. Our fax is 212 263 7500.
We look forward to helping you!
