Welcome to the Honors Program

1.  To graduate with honors you must:

·          complete 18 weeks of basic science research;

·          divided into two equal blocks conducted during the summers and last three years of medical school

·          complete the NYU Sackler Graduate School ethics course

·          attend a minimum of 10 honors lectures per year for two years

·          write a thesis (approx. 20 pages) detailing the results of your project

·          defend this thesis before a committee of three faculty members, including your mentor, and program administration

 
2. If this is your first research rotation:

·          you must have completed 1 semester of medical school

·          be in excellent academic standing

·          submit application to the Honors Program Office by April 15th

·          set up a meeting in the office to discuss your research interests and the program requirements

·          seek an approved mentor and project under the supervision of the program director

·          submit a brief (approx. 500 words) research proposal detailing your project signed by your mentor

·          obtain final approval of the mentor and project from the director

·          complete additional payroll paperwork in the program office

·          submit a one page abstract of your work no later than 4 weeks after completion of your rotation

 
3.  If this is your second research rotation:

·          submit application to Honors Program Office by April 15th

·          complete research project to the satisfaction of your mentor and write your thesis

·          submit a final draft to the Honors Program Office for reading no later than 48 hours prior to defense

·          defend no later than March 30th  of the year of your graduation at a time scheduled with the Program Office and Thesis Committee

 
PLEASE NOTE:

1. You cannot participate in both the honors and work-study programs simultaneously

2. You cannot receive both elective credit and a stipend for the same research period

3. The 2006-2008 stipend is $399 per week

4. Stipend support is for a maximum 9 consecutive week laboratory rotation, per calendar year
