Summer Student Nurse Extern Program

This is a full time 8-10 week program that allows the nursing student to develop technical and organizational skills in nursing.  The Student Nurse Extern:

  • Performs nursing procedures and related activities within the framework of written care plans and assignments of professional nurses.
  • Works closely with professional nurses to determine patients’ needs, implements activities of treatment/care, observes, reports and documents patient responses. Patient care assignments under the supervision of a professional nurse are carried out with a comprehensive approach to achieve specific outcomes.
  • Is introduced to various specialties (e.g., OR, PACU, CC) of interest through a clinical rotation model. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Completion of a minimum of one clinical semester with a medical/surgical focus in a BSN Program.
  • Acceptable transcript (GPA >3.0) and two clinical references from the school of nursing.
  • Successful completion of a written screening questionnaire.

  • Non-Union Staff: As a non-union employee, the hospital provides you with flex dollars to purchase your benefits. You select the benefits options you want and will need to add up the price for the options you choose, and compare that to the total price of the allotted flex dollars. If the total price is:
    • More than your flex dollars, you contribute the difference in cost.
    • The same as your flex dollars, you will not need to contribute anything.
    • Less than your flex dollars, you receive the difference as taxable pay.

Please Note: All regular full time and regular part time employees scheduled to work 17.5 hours or greater are eligible for the following benefits below.  New hires are eligible for benefits on their start date as long as their start date is the 1st of the month. If this is not the case, they will receive benefits on the 1st of the month following their start date.

Prescription Drug Plan - National Prescription Administrators offers a basic or an enhanced package.
Dental - Metlife PPO Basic or Plus, or choice of Cigna DHMO.
Vision - Available through the Eye Care Plan of America.
Life Insurance - Provided by Aetna US Healthcare upon hire date. The minimum level coverage is $15,000 per employee. Optional dependent life insurance is also available.
Short Term (STD) and Long Term Disability (LTD) - You may opt to waive LTD, but you must be covered by STD.
Retirement - Voluntary, tax-deferred (403 B) program.

Tuition Reimbursement Assistance - Reimbursement of up to $5,000.00 per year toward
       position related courses and degrees at any accredited institution are available for qualified staff.
