Spinal injections and nerve blocks are valuable tools in diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of chronic pain. They can be utilized to determine the pain-generator so that it may be properly treated as well as to provide significant pain relief to allow restorative physical therapy. Therefore, these procedures can have an important role in combating the loss of physical function as well as the development of chronic pain syndromes. They are relatively brief, minimally invasive, outpatient procedures that are well tolerated by patients. Only a short period of recovery is required and the patient can promptly resume their prior activity level and engage in physical therapy. These procedures offer a low risk path to proper diagnosis and therapy and are an effective component of the overall multidisciplinary plan.
