Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles just below the skin.
It is a useful therapeutic modalities for a wide range of pain conditions including neuropathic pain, back pain, myofascial pain and fibromyalgia, and migraine and tension headaches. Because the needles used for acupuncture are much smaller than those employed for other medical procedures, acupuncture usually results in no or minimal discomfort to the patient. The benefits from acupuncture can last for extended periods of time.
Though acupuncture has been utilized for thousands of years, recent studies have provided a clearer understanding of how it provides its analgesic effects.
Acupuncture appears to increase the brain’s secretion of endorphins, the body’s naturally occurring anti-pain chemicals, and also to increase the amount of other neurochemicals involved in the transmission of pain including serotonin and norepinephrine.
