Once examined at the Center, Dr. Joseph Herbert and his team create a thorough plan of treatment that addresses each patient's needs. The Center offers cutting-edge treatment options for MS disease management and comprehensive symptom management—all beginning with access to a highly experienced interdisciplinary team of professionals.
Our Center offers comprehensive clinical educational counseling through a multidisciplinary care model. Individuals living with MS are unique in their presentation and experiences, and our team is available to address those needs.
Our Team
Role of the MS Care Team Members
Our team is comprised of MS specialists: neurology, nursing, rehabilitation medicine, neurophysiology (nerve conduction, evoked potential studies), neuro-ophthalmology,
orthopedics, internal medicine, urology, psychology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, radiology, social services, and physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapy. Click here for a list of our clinical staff members.
Onsite Infusion Suite
In order to meet the needs of our clients, we have an onsite infusion suite. This service offers patients the convenience and access to therapies (i.e., corticosteroids, IVIG, Novantrone) that otherwise would be challenging to obtain, while maintaining a normal work and social schedule.
Symptom Management
Intensive symptom management is incorporated within our services for spasticity management (Baclofen pump initiation and management), bowel and bladder management, disease modifying therapies, and injection training and support programming.
Research
Research is an integral component of the MS Center clinical operations. The Center offers clinical research trials designed to treat MS; studies to treat the secondary symptoms of MS; and genetic studies to understand the cause of MS. Future research programs are under development to assess adherence to injectable medications, quality of life in MS, and the role of educational programming in MS patients.
Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit
The Center, being part of the Hospital for Joint Diseases, has the advantage of having an inpatient rehabilitation unit. The rehabilitation unit is designed to offer MS patients a thorough hospital stay that allows for a higher degree of coordinated medical, psychosocial, and rehabilitative services which then extends to the home and community.
National MS Society
A real strength of the hospital’s MS programming is its highly collaborative relationship and affiliation with the National MS Society – New York City Chapter. We strongly encourage our patients and families to register with the MS Society in order to provide them with up-to-date information on clinical management, research, advocacy, and education related to MS.
