The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries seeks students who are interested in a dance medicine career, and who instill professionalism and enthusiasm for this field. Our Center regularly accepts volunteers from many disciplines including exercise science, athletic training, kinesiology, pre-physical therapy, pre-medicine and arts administration. Placement depends upon the student's academic background, type of volunteer experience sought, and availability. Submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance. A phone or in-person interview may be requested prior to acceptance. This position is unpaid and does not provide school credit.

The General Internship is geared toward undergraduate or graduate students who would like exposure to the various careers in dance medicine, including: orthopaedic surgery; physical therapy; athletic training; education; and not-for-profit arts/hospital administration. The intern will be able to observe many on- and off-site clinical programs, injury prevention assessments, workshops and continuing education offerings, and much more. There is a mandatory contractual agreement between the hospital and the student's school. A minimum of 15/hrs per week for 6-12 weeks is expected.

The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries offers a full time, hospital-based dance affiliation program for athletic training students in their final academic year. As this is a clinical position and will require hands-on learning, there is a mandatory contractual agreement between the hospital and the student's school. Placement is determined by a review of the applicant’s curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, recommendations, dance experience, and a personal interview. Competition for affiliation opportunities is extremely high and spaces are limited. Positions are only offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. There are no clinical affiliations during the summer.
