Principles of Dance Medicine CME Course
Summer 2010
Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) at the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center has invited the HCDI staff to teach a 1-week intensive course for dance educators.
The goal of this course is for dance teachers to build a foundation for understanding the biological, pyschosocial and environmental factors that influence a dancer's current and future health. Through direct dance experience, discussion and the production of a culminating project, students will learn basic functional anatomy and biomechanics, injury prevention and conditioning, nutritional concerns for the dance population, and human development. At the conclusion of the course students will be able to integrate and apply the knowledge gained into their every day dance environment.

The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries is offering a new and innovative continuing education course for advanced clinicians that will focus on the regional interdependent examination model for the dancer-patient.
Through lectures, laboratory sessions and live demonstrations led by world-renowned experts in the field, clinicians will refine their powers of observation and evaluation process to consider factors beyond the site of injury in order to optimize treatment effectiveness.
Topics will include:
- What is regional interdependence?
- Relevance of regional interdependence to the dance population: a review of normal biomechanics of the lower quarter during gait, relevé, plié and passé.
- Seeing patterns in complex systems: preventing limitations in current evidence from blinding the clinician.
- Review of patterns commonly seen among dancer patients who present with the top three lower extremity complaints.
- Practical, hands-on labs to evaluate local and non-local influences on lower extremity complaints.
