Letter from David Dibner

We have some exciting new developments to share with you as NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases strengthens its role as one of the nation’s leaders in musculoskeletal care.

NYU Langone Medical Center has established its first six new Centers of Excellence, including one in Musculoskeletal Disease, to bring together outstanding basic scientists and clinical researchers from the NYULMC community to address some of today’s most pressing health challenges. The goal is to foster a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary investigation that inspires new ideas and discoveries in areas long recognized as institutional strengths, and where possible, to translate scientific advances more swiftly into new ways of treating patients and diagnosing and preventing disease. The six centers will collectively receive $15 million in funding from the Medical Center over the next three years.

The Center of Excellence in Musculoskeletal Care will be co-directed by clinical leaders at NYUHJD – Steven Abramson, M.D. of Rheumatology and Joseph Zuckerman, M.D. of Orthopaedic Surgery. Another Center of Excellence was selected as well in Multiple Sclerosis and will be headed up by Joseph Herbert, M.D., of the Department of Neurology. These two centers and four others were chosen from over 75 letters of intent, and the Science Strategy Committee reviewed 18 full proposals.

Additional good news includes having the NYUHJD Department of Orthopaedic Surgery rising in the rankings from number 10 to number eight in the 2008 U.S. News and World Report’s ‘Best Hospitals’ issue. Rheumatology remained strong at number 8 and the Rusk Institute ranked high at number 8. We’re also delighted that NYUHJD has been designated a UnitedHealth Premium Surgical Spine and Total Joint Replacement Specialty Center for 2007-2009. This means that we have met rigorous quality criteria based on nationally recognized medical standards and expert advice.

Plans are also underway for the construction of our new state-of-the-art, 110,000 square-foot Ambulatory Musculoskeletal Center at 38th Street and First Avenue which will be the largest facility of its kind in the country. It will house cutting-edge technology and research, advanced treatment and personalized outpatient care under one roof for conditions related to the spine, joints, sports medicine, arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. Radiology, infusions, rehabilitation, and pain management will also be available at this location. The site will also feature a free-standing ambulatory surgery center with most work dedicated to musculoskeletal surgery.

All of these developments are not only great news for NYUHJD but for you the patient as well because all of these efforts are being directed at optimizing your experience with us and doing the most important thing we can do – get you well.

Sincerely,

David A. Dibner, F.A.C.H.E.
