Volunteering

Volunteers are always welcome at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. People of many different backgrounds: Professionals, retirees, homemakers, high school, college and graduate students can all find a fulfilling position. We are a friendly, teaching hospital which can provide a meaningful volunteer experience. It is an excellent opportunity for high school and college students to learn about health care careers. Volunteers help patients and staff in numerous ways.

Types of Volunteers:
Patient Visitor
Engineering/Housekeeping Assistant
Physical and Occupational Therapy Aide
Book Sales Clerk
Nursing Aide
Office Assistant
Translator (Chinese, Russian and Spanish are among the languages
often translated.)
Pharmacy Aide
Research Assistant

Volunteers who can translate are in great demand and may be assigned to any area of the Hospital, and may be called upon to translate for many different disciplines.

How to Become a Volunteer:
Call the Volunteer Office at 212-598-6020 to schedule an appointment with Marie M. Beaudouin, Volunteer Coordinator.

What is required to be a volunteer?
1. Most importantly, your interest and enthusiasm.

2. We suggest a commitment of at least 100 hours over a one year period. Many volunteers work a minimum of 3 hours per week and up to 40 hours per week.

3. All volunteers must obtain medical clearance through our employee health service located at the NYU campus on First Avenue. Volunteers must be over 15 years old.

4. All nursing/health aides must attend a 2 hour nursing orientation scheduled periodically in the afternoons.
