About Us

NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, the musculoskeletal center of excellence at NYU Langone Medical Center, is a 190-bed facility located at 17th Street and Second Avenue in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan. First incorporated in 1905 and relocated to its present site in 1979, NYUHJD specializes in orthopaedic surgery, rheumatology and molecular medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and neurology. NYUHJD provides primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of service in the treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of musculoskeletal, rheumatologic, and neurological diseases and injuries. NYUHJD serves an area that encompasses New York City, Nassau County, New York State, Northern New Jersey and beyond. NYUHJD is a teaching site of the NYU School of Medicine.

 

Highlights of NYUHJD Centers of Excellence and Clinical Programs

Largest and most accomplished orthopaedic program in the region for the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders as well as in research and education. The clinical expertise of the faculty represents all subspecialty areas of orthopaedic surgery, including spine, total joint replacement, sports medicine and arthroscopy, pediatric orthopaedics, shoulder, hand, and foot and ankle. NYUHJD is one of the world's largest providers of total joint replacements, featuring some of the world's top clinicians. NYUHJD performs over 1,200 joint replacement procedures annually.

Largest pediatric orthopaedic program in New York City. Children receive comprehensive and interdisciplinary care for musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Center for Children. The Center’s child-friendly state-of-the-art environment houses its four specialty areas: orthopaedic surgery, neuromuscular disorders, limb lengthening and reconstruction, and pediatric rehabilitation and medicine. The Center features its own elevator, a ‘white-coat-free’ policy to minimize anxiety, and an interactive play area with entertaining activities.

The Department of Rheumatology and Medicine is a nationally known center for the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatologic disorders including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia and rheumatic and connective tissue disorders. The Department’s Center for Arthritis and Autoimmunity provides our patients with a well-coordinated, comprehensive program for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

The Department of Neuroscience is building on its excellent reputation for its leading-edge diagnostic and treatment programs in neurology, neurorehabilitation, pain management, traumatic brain injury, and multiple sclerosis. The department has been reorganized into the following sections: General Neurology, including Orthopaedic Neurology, Outpatient Pain Management, Initiative for Women with Disabilities, Multiple Sclerosis, Neurorehabilitation, and the Comprehensive Center for Adult Cerebral Palsy.

Preeminent lupus study and treatment program, particularly for pregnancy and lupus. NIH's National Registry for Neonatal Lupus is located at NYUHJD, and directed by Dr. Jill Buyon.

Major East Coast diagnostic and treatment center for spine care, pioneering cervical spine procedures. NYUHJD surgeons specialize in conservative care for spine disorders and use the most up-to-date treatments, including artificial discs for the neck and back, that lessen surgical complications and post-surgical pain and disability. NYUHJD spine specialists have extensive sub-specialty training for treatment of the cervical, lumbar and/or thoracic spine.

The Diabetes Foot and Ankle Center provides interdisciplinary care for lower extremity diseases in patients with diabetes. The Center provides evaluation and treatment of all podiatric conditions including nerve damage, foot ulcers, foot deformities, and poor circulation.

Major center for the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Bone densitometry is performed, and newest treatment techniques are used. The Center also participates in numerous clinical trials.

The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries provides comprehensive high-quality, affordable care for the dance community. This unique, specialized program features faculty members who are highly-respected and well known within the dance, medical and athletic training communities. They provide coverage for many major dance companies and have cared for some of the world's leading dancers. Injury prevention is a major focus of the Center's community education and clinical research efforts.

I-Care is the only walk-in Orthopaedic Immediate Care Center in New York City. Our Center offers a unique service that deals specifically with urgent orthopaedic injuries.

CARF-accredited, inpatient orthopaedic Rehabilitation Center. NYUHJD is the only orthopaedic/rheumatology facility in the New York area that has both rehabilitation beds and in-house Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational (OT), guaranteeing a continuum of care.

Regional center for Ilizarov bone growth and limb lengthening. NYUHJD physicians were the first in the U.S. to use this revolutionary bone lengthening technique.

Internationally recognized Occupational and Industrial Orthopaedic Center offers a unique capacity to treat occupational injuries using a multidisciplinary approach, while instructing patients in preventative techniques. OIOC is the forefront of research in the cause and prevention of workplace orthopaedic injuries.

Major Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) rehabilitation unit uses invasive state-of-the-art techniques for cognitive rehabilitation, including simulation of real-life situations. TBI unit also has the capability to provide in-house orthopaedic rehab, a major benefit since many patients have orthopaedic as well as brain injuries.

Rusk Institute- NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Center for the rehabilitation of arthritis and osteoporosis patients. Only Physical Therapy (PT) center in the city that has a fully- equipped gym and pool.

The Initiative for Women with Disabilities Elly and Steve Hammerman Health & Wellness Center is a multi-disciplinary center committed to providing respectful, high-quality gynecological, medical and wellness services for women with physical disabilities. This nationally known Center empowers women with physical disabilities to pursue a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing health and wellness through education, fitness, support and social services. In addition to promoting a healthy lifestyle, our programs help prevent osteoporosis, heart diseases, and musculoskeletal pain.
