The NYU/Bellevue AIDS Clinical Trials Unit

The NYU/Bellevue AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU), under the direction of Judith A. Aberg, MD, is part of a large NIH-funded network of sites called the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). The ACTG is the largest HIV clinical trials organization in the world and plays a major role in setting standards of care for HIV infection and opportunistic diseases related to HIV/AIDS in the United States and the developed world. woman actuThe ACTG is composed of, and directed by, leading clinical scientists in HIV/AIDS therapeutic research. The ACTG is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health through the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The NYU/Bellevue AIDS Clinical Trials Unit divides clinical trials into four categories:

  • Immune Enhancers - Studies that try to help strengthen the immune system against other illnesses, such as opportunistic infections and co-infections, that are often associated with having HIV.
  • Reducing Side Effects - Studies that look to reduce the negative side effects of HIV medications on the people who take these medicines.
  • Medication Naive trials are trials for people who have never taken HIV medications before.
  • Medication Experienced trials are trials for people who have taken HIV medications before
