Pediatric Hematology–Oncology Resident & Medical Student Education

The Division of Pediatric Hematology–Oncology at NYU Langone offers a four-week elective for residents and medical students, providing broad clinical experience in treating hematologic and oncologic diseases. Though the elective concentrates on clinical care in ambulatory clinics, you may also perform inpatient consultations supervised by fellows and faculty at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

Faculty teach the etiology and pathogenesis of common disorders, as well as some uncommon conditions that illustrate essential elements of disease pathophysiology. Much of the learning in this elective is case based, occurring in the office, at the microscope, and at the bedside. Throughout the elective, you work closely with all the division’s faculty members, who specialize in various areas of hematology–oncology, including hemoglobinopathies, bleeding disorders, platelet disorders, hematological malignancies, solid tumors, and neuro-oncology.

Residents and students actively participate in didactic lectures, including grand rounds, disease management conferences, journal club, tumor board, and seminars led by faculty and fellows. A syllabus of selected reviews and relevant articles is provided, and residents may observe and perform procedures such as a spinal tap and bone marrow aspiration and biopsy with attending physicians. Residents and students also regularly review bone marrow and peripheral blood smears at the microscope with an attending physician during their rotation.

Some of the hematologic conditions that you learn to diagnose and treat include the following:

  • anemia and aplastic anemia
  • hemoglobinopathies
  • hemophilia and von Willebrand disease
  • lymphadenopathy
  • neutropenia
  • platelet function disorders
  • red blood cell membrane defects
  • splenomegaly
  • thrombocytopenia
  • thrombocytosis
  • thromboses

You also learn about the pathogenesis of childhood cancer, as well as the diagnosis, molecular basis, and management of oncologic conditions including the following:

  • acute lymphoblastic and acute myelogenous leukemia
  • bone and soft tissue sarcomas
  • brain tumors
  • hepatic tumors
  • histiocytosis
  • Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • neuroblastoma
  • renal tumors
  • retinoblastoma

The curriculum also includes education about supportive therapies for hematologic and oncologic conditions including transfusion therapy and apheresis therapy, as well as the management of coagulopathy, transfusional hemochromatosis, tumor lysis syndrome, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and fever and neutropenia.

Residents and students also have opportunities to perform basic and clinical research under the supervision of the division’s faculty members. You may arrange special research electives through the division or NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
