Music Therapy

Music TherapyMusic therapists use music in a medical setting in order to address a person’s needs (physical, emotional, cognitive, and social). Music therapy is helpful for people of all ages. Because every patient is different, therapists are able to create personal music sessions for siblings of patients in groups or in a one-on-one setting.

Music therapists and siblings work together using

  • music improvisation
  • receptive music listening
  • song writing
  • lyric discussion
  • musical imagery
  • music performance
  • learning through music

By using music as a tool, children often find an easy way to talk about their thoughts and feelings. Music therapy helps people understand their emotions and feelings. It also gives children a creative way to communicate with other people. Music therapists are able to evaluate a child ’s physical health, social functioning, communication abilities, and thinking skills through music.

The Hassenfeld music therapist works with patients, families, and medical staff in the treatment room during different procedures By using music, the therapist can:

  • help patients relax
  • calm a patient’s fears
  • distract patients during medical procedures

Our music therapist has also been trained in hypnosis, progressive muscle relaxation, and music assisted imagery. The music therapist uses these tools to teach patients different ways to relax and how to think calming thoughts. The Hassenfeld music therapist uses her voice or musical instruments such as the guitar and the harp.
